Politics and Religion O (not)

Our ‘casual historian’ does have opinions if you asked… but do so with caution. (chuckle) Seriously though, collecting local history – even related to politics – is still fun. And yes, George does have a bit of experience when his wife ran, won, and was a councilwoman for 2 years!

You’ll recognize names like Hirsch, Mitch Shank, Phil Barker, David Craig, Anna Long, Chad Tate, Tom Hatem, McLhinney, and many more. You can learn more about them and find a list of all of our mayors from the first through to the present mayor, Bill Martin, in Jack’s and Henry’s book, Havre de Grace. (Link to the right)

Interesting that even then they were running on such themes as “No more SECRET meetings!” Hmmmm…

During the ten years alluded to the revenue of the City for different sources has been about $100,000, to which add the $40,000 debt and we have an expenditure of $140,000 in ten years in our small town. It would not be so bad if the town were adequately benefited, but some of the expenditures have proven unwise.

It might be interesting to note that the $140,000 in 1899 would be worth about $4.5 million today! Not a small amount!
