Eps 69 HdG Art Show Celebrates ’60’ in 2023

Events, The Arts

The arts in Havre de Grace are a large part of our culture – from painting, pottery, jewelry, and sculpture to music and theater. The Havre de Grace Art Show is the ‘signature’ art show for Havre de Grace. This Saturday, September 30, 2023, will be the 60th year for this event. It will be in two parks, Tydings and Concord Point Parks with the Promenade easily connecting the two venues. CLICK HERE for a great article from Harford County Living about this year’s event.

Celebrating 60 Years in 2023, the show began as the “Million Dollar Mile” Art Show. Fencing in Tydings Park laid out like a maze and hung with art that was calculated to be worth a million dollars was the design of the first show. Gunther Hirsch and his late wife, Poldi, were the visionaries for this event that continues this year!

The “Million Dollar Mile” was a huge success. In 1977 Gunther Hirsch, then Mayor of Havre Grace, approached members of the Soroptimist Int’l of Havre de Grace Club, asking them to take over the Art Show. This became their largest fundraiser.

Art can harness the healing power within each of us
and help bring us into community with one another.

from Jackie Armstrong, 2021

Over the years this Havre de Grace Art Show has grown and changed. But the beauty of the arts always shines through. The event is free to attend and truly offers something for everyone. The fine arts and crafts offer from exquisite to the whimsical and everything in between. Add entertainment, music, a special children’s section and programs, and, lest we forget, delicious foods.

Remember, don’t throw the Havre de Grace ‘stuff’ out when you’re cleaning out a home, settling an estate, or just ‘downsizing,’ without checking in with George. Don’t give him cause to cry!!!
