It’s been a while, but we’re back. We decided to return with a fun post about George’s collection of Havre de Grace hats and caps.
The featured image at the top of this blog includes (l to r) a cap worn by a delivery guy from Rice’s Bakery, a 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Cap with a beautiful hat box for safekeeping, and a Stetson Bolo Derby Hat from the 1930s—all of these from the Harris’ estate.
Below are a variety of military caps from a WWI cap (brown) from Mr. Healy, a VFW cap from Phil Barker, a gray American Legion cap from Mr. Joseph Hargis’ estate, and the red and blue American Legion Caps from the Harris’ estate.

The WWI uniform mentioned in the video is from EPS 37 Honoring Veterans of WWI:
from EPS 37 Honoring Veterans of WWI
This WWI uniform was worn by John D. Franko, originally from Greece. He served from January 30, 1918 and was honorably discharged May 13, 1919. The uniform and papers were donated to our Havre de Grace History MuZeum at Bahoukas Antique Mall by his daughter, Margaret Dawson.
It’s interesting to note that we researched the red one because we’d not seen one before. Here’s what we learned when we asked GOOGLE:
Yes, the American Legion does have a red cap, but it’s not for all members. The red cap is reserved for National Officers—the highest level of Legion leadership. These distinguished members have dedicated years of service and now work on behalf of all Legionnaires at a national level.
according to an Instagram post from the Henry K. Burtner American Legion Post 53.

Below are the Postal Cap from Joseph’s Dept. Store attic, a Stetson from Leithiser’s Men’s Shop, and a Super Chevrolet Service Cap donated by Phyllis and Lee Perzanowski. The station was located on Route 40 (Pulaski Hwy).

And last, but definitely not least, a selection of sports caps including a Havre de Grace Boys Football Cap, Havre de Grace Baseball Cap, Price’s Seafood Cap (now Water Street Seafood), and a beautifully framed and autographed 2005 LPGA golf cap (Bulle Rock, Havre de Grace) from the Dan Lee (of MacGregor’s Restaurant) collection.

George is still collecting hats. So be watching for a 2nd HATS video. Till then, be sure to stop by BAHOUKAS ANTIQUE MALL and browse the walls and cases of local collections in our Havre de Grace History MuZeum. Open 7 days a week.
